Fishing Rod Comes in Contact with
Heavily Charged Wire -----Charles F. Rickey,
prominent citizen of Minden, and formerly a
merchant at Buckhorn, Eureka County, several
years ago, was instantly killed several days ago
at power plant six miles east of Gardnerville,
on the east fork of the Carson river, when the
steel fishing rod which he carried came in
contact with a live wire and a charge of 66,000
volts passed through his body. Rickey, with his
daughter Miss Vivian, had been fishing on the
banks of the river, and he was going up to the
dam, where she had already preceded him when the
accident happened. It is presumed that he
carried the rod over his shoulder and that it
did not occur to him that the distance was
lessening between the ground and the wires as he
ascended the bank and thoughtless of the danger
he permitted the rod to touch one of the wires.
The hand which held the rod was a little burned,
but outside of this there were no other marks on
Rickey's body. Death was apparently
instantaneous. An inquest was later held and a
verdict rendered that death resulted from
accident. Mr. Rickey was engaged in the
confectionery business at Minden was about 52
years of age and leaves a mother, wife, three
daughters and a son to mourn his untimely and
unfortunate death. Eureka, Nevada Saturday June
